Exotic Small Mammal Care

Our animal hospital enjoys welcoming exotic small mammals, often called “pocket pets,” for lifelong care. These tiny creatures have short lifespans due to their high metabolism and should see their veterinarian frequently to ensure they’re staying healthy.

Our small animal veterinarians see rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice, chinchillas, and ferrets, providing services such as:

  • Annual wellness exams
  • Blood work
  • Dental exams and X-ray imaging (rabbits, chinchillas, and guinea pigs are especially prone to dental issues)
  • Spaying/neutering

Care for Reptiles

We welcome turtles, small snakes, and lizards, including bearded dragons, iguanas, chameleons, and geckos. If you have recently added a reptile to your animal family, we recommend scheduling a visit with your McMurray reptile veterinarian as soon as possible, ideally within 48 hours of adoption. This is because reptiles are adept at hiding illness, and diagnostic testing is critical to finding and treating hidden health problems.

Diagnostics we recommend for reptiles include:

  • Blood work
  • Fecal testing
  • Bacterial cultures
  • X-ray imaging

Husbandry Consultations for Reptiles

We offer care and husbandry consultation appointments for a wide range of reptiles, from bearded dragons and corn snakes to ball pythons and turtles. We can also see tarantulas! One of our very own veterinary technicians, Katie, is here to walk you through the proper care and husbandry of your new scaly companion. These consultations are ideal for healthy, recently adopted reptiles. If your reptile happens to be ill, please schedule an exam with our exotic veterinarian.

*We will need to know species before scheduling!  Please call if you have qustions regarding if we can do a consultation wtih your specific species.

Bird Care

Birds are gorgeous animals and they can make wonderful companions. They can also be prone to a wide number of diseases affecting the eyes, respiratory tract, and feathers. These diseases can be quite contagious, so identifying and treating them early is essential to helping your bird recover and preventing the spread of illness to other animals.

A change in environment can be taxing to a newly adopted bird, so it’s important to schedule a vet visit as soon as possible. When you bring in your bird, make sure it’s in its own cage. We’ll perform a comprehensive examination, and evaluate your bird’s cage, dishes, and toys for safety and hygiene. Maintaining a proper habitat for your bird is paramount, as many bird illnesses stem from their environment. Our avian vets can treat most regular-sized pet birds, including parrots, budgies, Macaws, and chickens.

Be sure to contact us if you have any questions about your exotic pet or would like to schedule an appointment!
